Power Purchase Agreement initialed with Electricity Company of Ghana for Ayitepa Wind Farm

On 10th March 2015, the Power Purchase Agreement for our 225 MW wind farm at Ayitepa was initialed at the Headquarters of the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd. (ECG) in Accra. This is a very important step regarding the finalization of the development of the first large scale wind farm in West Africa.

The Agreement is two-phased and secures to Upwind Ayitepa Ltd. the delivery of 150 MW of clean wind power in a first phase with the possibility to extend the project up to 225 MW in a second phase. It is the first PPA signed in Ghana for a wind park and therefore has some kind of a pioneering role.

Commenting on this PPA, Mr. Ebenezer Baiden, General Manager at ECG for Regulatory and Governmental Affairs, stated: “This agreement is a huge step forward for this project and ECG is supporting the implementation as it helps to overcome at least part of the current electricity crisis in Ghana. Now, ECG is in a very good position to collaborate with the developers in order to ensure that this project comes into operation as quickly as possible.”

Dr. Christoph Kapp, who initialed the PPA from Upwind’s side, said: “This is a milestone for the first large scale wind project in Western Africa and shows that the Government of Ghana is supporting the implementation of renewables in the future. We will together with our partners for this project, Mainstream and Actis, ensure that construction of the wind farm Ayitepa will start as quickly as possible and that everybody is contributing in reaching financial close therefore in the near future.”
